Multiple questions here.
I have an exterior fibreglass door to stain. The surface is textured to look like wood grain but is very light coloured. The stain colour is to be a walnut colour. The door manufacturer says to paint it first, then apply stain and clear coat. Do I need to use exterior (deck) stain or will a quality gel stain work ? What would be the best clear coating ? I live in Canada where temperature ranges from -40 to plus 80 Fahrenheit
Thanks

The only reliable answer will come from the door manufacturer l. I guarantee they have an entire procedure and clear instructions on specifically to use. Go to the manufacturer.
Thanks
I have emailed the door manufacturer and waiting on a reply
My understanding is that gel stain was developed for use on fiberglass. However, I can't tell you if there any special processes or techniques that are different than using it on wood. Starting out with paint doesn't make sense to me, but I have no experience staining fiberglass.
The “paint first “ instruction didn’t make sense to me either, but I have emailed the manufacturer and I’m waiting for a reply.
Thanks for your input
If you can find a manufacturer's name I can most likely find you a finishing spec.
Thanks for the reply
