Went to pick up some poplar today and found this in the corner of the show room where I buy lumber. This maple is sorted out so it dose not go to the cabinet shops as they reject it , Mind you there another rack on the other side of the showroom with figured maple at figured maple prices . The three boards tally out to 50 bdft in 5/4 , so i ask how much , 291$. The boards are 21″ x10,’ 18″x10′ and 12″ x10′ . works out to 5.83 a bdft. Apparently they are very honest , if the boards come in as sel&btr kd and look like these they do not try and sell them as figured , just plain ol 5/4 because the cab shops kick it back, Go figure

You should buy a lottery ticket, your luck is with you. You don't often find figure that consistent in the expensive piles.
I second that
That was a good day!
I wonder?
.. Your comment.. do not try and sell them as figured , just plain ol 5/4 because the cab shops kick it back, Go figure..
My local wood supplier has wonderful wood at prices VERY expensive to 'I wonder why they are selling it at the price posted'..
Olw Hardwood here in Chicago.. For my two China style canopy beds. I saw one day, a huge stack of Q/S Sapele and some Panga-Panga. The long wide boards of Sapele were perfect (for my use). I even asked the checkout lady if the prices were corect. She said if it is marked for a price, we sell it to you at the price. (I love to pick out wood at prices marked onto a board) . I never see that at any other place I shop for wood. I always go back to Owl Hardwoods.
I 'think' that the cheep Panga-Panga was sold because it looked wild grain (I pick out this wood on purpose) and may be 'reactive wood'.. I aad a few boards thet were really reactive when ripped but most were very long and useable after rippng. Even most, but not all, of the reactive wood was very useable for my beds. I even had left-overs for making two 'sitting benches' for at the foot of each bed.
I wonder about the wide boards of Q/S Sapele. It was about the best wood I EVER purchased from them or any other place?
I use Poplar often and it is FAR from junk wood!
As to.. just plain ol 5/4 because the cab shops kick it back, Go figure..
I would think, but not sure, that the most trade at Owl are finish carpenters? They have different ideas about what makes their day to day living.. Not sure. All I can say is that they purcase ALOT of poplar.. Why I like getting poplar for them. I gets turned over often and the scrapt left isperfect for me at reduced prices!!
I wonder why all wood supliers do not mark each board for the price. I look at many woods that I thought I could never afford. I buy some for trim. And boards for projects I want make. We both are happy!
I have even asked them to price a board that was un-marked.. I had to wait a few moments and I got a price.. If it was way to expensive for me to purchase... I NEVER received any flack from them for asking.
What a wood store should be. Maybe I am still getting ripped of (I doubt it) but I go away happy and always come back!
