fiddleback, tigerstrip ,burl, white oak
Some of you know that I’m building a timber frame and as such I get my wood direct from the sawmill.
I picked up a piece of 6″x9″ white oak and planed it only to find the above described wood all on one beam. guess I’m gonna has to display it in a promenant place.. (like right as you walk in!)
Stunning. God was certainly busy that day!

WOW! certainly would be nice to see a photo of that one .The last house I built had a couple of logs that caught my fancy and they miraculously ended up as exposed beams right over the kitchen table.Just good luck I guess
I'd take a picture but from experiance I can tell you grain doesn't show at all well when you buy disposable camera's
I found a piece like that 2"t x 12"w x 32"l not too long ago in a friends house. I asked him what he was going to do with it and he gave it to me. I had it sliced into 1/8"t veneers and will be using it for drawer front for a vanity table for my doughter. When the a piece of wood like the one you described comes along, you need to stretch it to get the most out of its beauty.
Ya see, that's the differance between framers "n" furniture makers. Us timber framers would consider it an insult to use veneers. we use big pieces of things. I have cut offs that are bigger than a lot of my wood working buddies whole projects.
There are different uses for different types of woods -- I would never use veneer to be laminated onto a beam. That is just asking for trouble, eventually it would delaminate and look like crap. Like you said, it depends what you are making. If I were a timber framer and came accross a piece like that, it would be displayed in a prominent location, untouched. A furniture maker would like to use it in a bed room set or something similar were you can use the same wood of the log in different pieces. It is your piece so you decide what you want to do with it. Whatever it is you do with it I am sure it will look outstanding -- as long as it is not hidding behind sheet rock.
One of the weaknesses of this format is you can't see the grin I had when I wrote my comments. Rereading them I could certainly see have they made me seem arogant and snobbish. I'm glad you didn't take it that way.... never meant to sound so pompous.
I know this format makes it difficult to see peoples faces. I don't judge on the written part -- too much missing from it. It does help to describe expressions in parenthesis as I've seen people do.
Enjoy that oak!!!
See if you could post a picture of it to give an idea of the size and figure. I'd like to drool over it a bit.
