Could someone explain the difference in a filler and a glaze, when and how each should be used. I need to finish a bed and one method that I found for a fumed Mission finsih calls for a glaze step. I don’t have a glaze on hand, but I do have a black oil based filler that could be thinned. Would this work well instead of a glaze?

The authoritative finishing book is Understanding Wood Finishing by Bob Flexner, published by Rodale.
Wood filler is intended to fill the pores on large-pored wood like oak, creating a perfectly smooth surface that can the be finished.
Glaze is intended to add color to the finish. It has nothing to do with filling pores.
But if you want a complete explanation, read Flexner's book. It's terrific.
