I’ve got some cherry that is dried and surfaced but now that I’m doing some work with it I’ve run into some checks – probably from the drying process?? – and some worm tracks (I assume that’s what they are -they’re no more than about a 32nd or a 64th deep and 1/2″ to 3″ long). What’s a good filler material to use on either or both? Were there previous searches for this info?

Depending on how wide they are, you can take some fine cherry dust, and mix it with your finish, or shellac, and fill the holes/checks that way. If you use a glue that doesn't except finish, it'll show a different color when you DO finish it.

Jeff,
Thanks. I'll do that on a test piece.

I would strongly advise using some sort of glue or bonding agent to fill the checks. Something that will bond the two surfaces to each other. The reason is that a check which is merely filled, but not bonded, will continue to grow or at the very least, the material used to just fill it can and usually does come out over time... leaving the check unfilled and marring the aesthetics of the object.
One easy way to deal with small checks is to use either superglue or a two-part epoxy and mix in some sawdust of the same wood and then use that to fill the check. That same-species sawdust in the mix helps a great deal in hiding the repair area after it's finished.
Epoxy is a good filler for cherry--just be sure to get one that dries clear. I use DevCon 2 part epoxy (available at Lowes). Works great on pitch pockets, too.
