I am rebuilding/refinishing an old oak desk. It was originally build with some nails and so I have some holes to fill. I will be staining the wood, followd by a protective finish. What is the best way to fill the holes, hopefully that takes some stain?
1. Sawdust and yellow glue?
2. Sawdust and hide glue?
3. A commercial product? Suggestions?
4. Other?
Thanks for any help.

I like to finish first and fill later, usually with color matched crayon type putty that you just rub in and wipe off with a soft rag. Min-wax sells many colors in both crayon type and little jars, the latter of which is my preference. I think I have seen kits as well that allow you to mix a custom color.
I just fill the hole with yellow glue and then cram in sawdust from my sander. Makes them invisible.
