I have a cherry table top with some pitch pockets. I like the look of the pitch pockets but I’d like to fill them flat with a clear filler. I am planning on using a wiping varnish as the finish. Grain or Pore fillers tend to be too thin to fill such large holes and I cannot seem to find a wood filler that dries clear. Any ideas?
Thanks,
– Narendra

There was a recent thread on this; epoxy works very well, no shrinking or adhesion problems, and can be left clear, tinted to match the wood with dust, or turned black with finely ground charcoal. If you don't usually use the stuff, the syringes at your local borg will work fine, expecially for minute quantities you usually need for stuff like this. Fill a little proud of the surface, and scrape or sand flush. The only finishes that does poorly over epoxy that I have run into are water-based ones. Heavy bodied varnishes do great at filling the sanding scratches from 220; for oils, you may want to do final sanding at 400+ grit.

Hello Narendra, I too have the same issue on a project that I am working on. I have not done it yet but I think that I am going to try InLace. It is an epoxy like product that depending on the color you use can give a stone like appearance. It appears that it is mostly used by turners, but I don't know why it would not work for filling pitch or knot holes.
I actually think I will try the color "Lacey". Check out the link below. They also have "Nuggets", "Metal Dust" and dyes.

Epoxy would be the only thing that I would use.
is opt for good epoxy. System 3 or West. They are 100% solids epoxy, unlike cheap home depot epoxy, they dont contain solvents that would shrink.
I would normally agree; S3 and West are great stuff, and in a totally different class than anything the home centers carry, but we are talking about pitch pockets, not the Grand Canyon. The $4 syringes work fine for small dings, small knots, and wormholes.
