Final Call!! Northwest WWer’s gathering
I’ve sent emails to everyone on my list for Northwesterners who raised their hands for a party!!!!! The two people who might not have been contacted are Dick and “McMark” — please email me (click my name above) to get me your addys.
Haven’t spoken up yet? It’s not to late! But I beg you, please email me (click my name above — say, is there an echo in here?). I really need to do this directly rather than having to work through the board.
We need more Knotheads! I know you’re out there, and if you have Saturday, April 9th free for some elbow bending and great food with a bunch of certified Knotheads, speak up! It’s going to be a fine time! If you have no idea what I’m talking about, it’s a WWers’ gathering at Tom shop (beautiful, gorgeous, well-equipped) in Fremont. He’s roasting a pig, we’re all bringing appetizers and side-dishes, and show-and-tell, tool swap, whatever!
Looks like we’ll have close to 30 people there at least. Folks from WWA are joining us Knotheads. See ya there!

I'm a coming...
Now as to what to bring, that's sorta of a problem as to the drive time from Ocean Shores, plus trying to stop at the show first. I can probably coerce the wife into making a chocolate, chocolate chip, kahlua cake, and mabe an apple or carrot cake. Will this suffice?
I'll be bring that dust collector with me too.
Anyone want to mess around with a vacuum press? I'll bring a small set up with a few bags if anyone is interested.

Hey Migrane,You pushed my button with the words "vacuum press". I'm planning on setting up a press in the very shop you'll be visiting. If you'd like to demonstrate one, we'll make a space, for sure.Tom
I'll be there - I responded to the other thread. Bringing bread and goodies from Pane D'Amore in PT.

Would anyone be interested in seeing some examples of hand spun metal stuff? That's one of my latest passions. Not woodworking, I know, but interesting none the less.

YES! Dennis, please bring them. I really want to see 'em in person.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
for those of us on the east coast, can you post pictures?I used a metal lathe in junior highschool and made a prick-punch for my dad (35 years ago) He still uses it - says it's the best PP he's ever owned.I've seriously considered getting a metal lathe. So many tools, so little time :-)Mark
Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.
Hi Mark -If I did this right, here's a picture of the things I made at the metal spinning workshop............

I'll be there. I'm going to pick up Splintie and IanDG in my VW microbus and we'll make the drive from their place.
Ought to be an interesting commute.
Cstan, Splintie and Ian -- YIPEEEEEEEE!!!! I don't think you 3 got my email, did you? shame on me! OK, I'll get it in the cyberstream right now!
BTW, a couple of the guys at WWA have offered limited accomodations to those who live far far away. They both live in Snohomish, about 45 mins. from Seattle. LMK if that would be helpful.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
We'll be careful not to mention politics, religion or the use of toothpaste as a polishing medium.
IanDG
What's wrong with toothpaste as a polishing medium? It's an excellent fine abrasive.Leon Jester
Don't -- for Goodness sake!
The last time a luthier posted a remark like that, insults rained down on all and one poster was banned.
.... and that was in the days of Tim Sams, a most moderate moderator.
IanDG
I shall consider myself warned.I gather that BonAmi is right out then, so I won't discuss how I used it to polish PAKO dryer drums.Hope this finds you well, my best to Splintie.Leon Jester
ACTIVITIES: OK, so far we have the vacuum-press experience, courtesy of migraine (Brian); long-bow making courtesy of Tom; a look at metal spinning, courtesy of Dennis. I'm going to bring my miniature pedestals and see if anyone has suggestions to improve the look or the production process.
I'm volunteering Tom to demonstrate sharpening scrapers for anyone who'd like to get a how-to on that -- he's a great teacher! There are going to be some goodies from FWW there, still talking with Sysop about that. Poor Tom -- he'll need to give a talk on how his shop developed too. Ahhh, I can hear him pounding on his desk right now -- "Jamie, stop it!" Well, you'll have to see his shop to understand.
PICTURES: If you have a portfolio, or just a boxful o' pictures of your work, please bring them! We did this at the WWA gathering a few years ago and it was great fun.
Personally, I'd love to have a sawblade show-down, but since Tom's saw is a 12" model, that's out. Oh well.
Any more ideas???? Please volunteer -- a demo, a problem you need help solving (we'll get real creative toward 5pm or so, LOL!). If you have some smallish samples of your work you'd like to show off, bring 'em!! Send me info, I'll make a sign.

Hey Jamie,A saw blade showdown is a cool idea. The MM CU300 has a 5/8" arbor, so bring on all comers! I use a 12" Pranzia ATB with a bushing that came with the saw.A band saw showdown is possible also, if anyone hase a saw for a 16"BS. I'll see if the local Lenox dealer has the moxie to show up. ;-)Tom
So, we can slap 10" blades on it? Cool!
OK, guys 'n gals, bring your best of the following categories:
24-tooth (or so) rip blade
"glue-line" rip blade
Combo or general purpose (such as Forrest WWII)
cross-cut
If we want to get real fancy, we could also try out various melamine and plywood blades. Give it your best shot! We'll duel with 'em!!!!! Publish a report right here at Knots. Too fun.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Anyone mind if a busted up old carpenter showed up? Not really a Knothead but I read a little over at Breaktime. Promise not to say squat. Just like to connect with other woodworkers (and see this shop/gallery).Free speech leads to a free society.
Hey Jim,Perhaps you're not familar with the neighborhood of Fremont, in Seattle. The "Artists' Republic of Fremont" has as it's Latin motto,"Quirkus Libertas" (Freedom to be Strange)Believe me, a beat up old carpenter is welcome as anyone else.Tom
Thanks, Tom. Hopefully I can make it.
Hey. They aren't planning any nude parades that day are they? Free speech leads to a free society.
Hey Jim,So you ARE familiar with Fremont. Sorry, the parade's at the summer solstice. Come early, if you want parking.Tom

You betcha, Jim, c'mon over! Please click on my name above and send me an email so we can connect directly!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Jamie -I'm definitely not anywhere near a proficient metal spinner but - Does Tom, do you have a lathe in your shop? If so, what size is the tool post? 1"?? I can bring my spinning rest, a couple tools and some material and show (kinda) how this spinning stuff is done............
From Beautiful Skagit Co. Wa.
Dennis
Dennis, I don't remember seeing a lathe in Tom's shop, but then I was so a-gaga maybe I missed it. Or, perhaps this is just the excuse he needs to go out an get one, LOL!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Dennis,Sorry, but a lathe is still on my wish list. I have a space ready for one, but I'm resisting as hard as I can.My old man has an old Craftsman bench lathe, It's pretty light duty, buf it might work. I'll ask him if he'll bring it with him when he comes.Lathe or no lathe, he'd still better have Mom's macaroni salad with him when he gets here. :-)Tom
Tom -Ask him to find out what the diameter of the tool post is. If it's not 1" then don't bother. One needs a different type of tool rest for spinning - a regular wood turning rest won't work.I'll just bring the pieces for show & tell............
From Beautiful Skagit Co. Wa.
Dennis
Hey Dennis,I'm pretty sure that the post is less than1". I guess the next party will have to be at your shop. ;-)I've always been fascinated by spinning. It sort of strikes me as a lost art.Tom
Tom -There are still a lot of shops around that do spinning work but most of them are CNC or otherwise automated. There are probably only 20 or 30 hand or "stick" spinners left in the country. But there is a very real interest in the craft.Jack Davis in Tacoma is a master spinner and holds workshops for anyone who is interested in learning the basics. Kinda spendy but it's an all day session, hands on. I got a lot out of it............

Hey, 'sounds like quite an event!
I probably can't make it, but there's a chance. I'm actually driving through the Seattle area the day before, Friday April 8. I have to be in Vancouver Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday morning on business. My current itinerary is to drive home to Oregon Friday afternoon, with a stop at Grizzly to pick up a G0543 & a G1276 (yippee!) on the way.
I currently need to be home on Saturday. But if that requirement goes away, I could make it. Certainly, not facing several hours of stop-and-go Friday evening Sea-Tac traffic is not a bad thing.
That would be great, Barry! Keep us posted, and if you can make it try to drop me an email if you would. We'll keep a beer .... uhhhh..... seat warm for you, LOL!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Just a bit to far from Portland with fuel prices being what they are, besides I gotta work. Sound like a fun time with a bunch of dusty, dirty WWers, eatin pig with a cold adult beverage.
Chief
Oh, it'll definitely be a good time, LOL! If your willpower's weak on the "gotta work" part of it, you might want to post over at WWA -- I think at least one Portland member is driving up.http://www.woodworking.org/Exchange/Forum2/HTML/020003.html (the thread)

Forestgirl;
Sorry, but it doesn't look like we'll be able to make it over the mountain this time.
