My current project is almost at an end and i dont want to screw it up. After brushing on several thick coats of shellac I sanded to 1200 and rubbed out with the white plastic steel woollike. Then gave it a french polishing and it shined up real nice. Now to achieve a real sparkling final finish i am proposing rubbing out with 4F and rottenstone. My question will i be taking a step backwards by using these scouring powders? i.e. how discernible are the scratches left by rottenstone rubbed with a felt pad? Thank you Mr. Jewitt and all the rest of you who have taken the time to answer my questions and given advice.

I think perhaps you have your steps a little out of order. I'd suggest buying Mr. Jewitts's book dealing with hand applied finishes and follow his procedure(s) exactly.
*I agree your a little out of order, I've learned at least four different ways of french polishing, so I can only hope you finished with rubbing IN wax. I assume from the date you've finished the piece. i'm interested in how you proceeded.
