Hi All,
I’ve been doing some reading about Japanese woodwork and discovered a substance they use to finish called Urushi, or Japanese Lacquer. I did some reading, and discovered that it comes from a tree, and contains the same irritant as Poison Oak, until it dries, which is supposed to be strong, and durable, as well as resistant to many chemical solvents. I’m interested in trying it (With proper safety precautions) but I can’t find where to buy it. I was wondering if anyone knows where to get it, and if you’ve used it, any tips or tricks that you think would help. Thanks!

check out that link in the Mind Blowing Joinery thread. The link has a page about Urushi.

Daggs,
That's where I first saw the idea. They don't make any mention of where to buy the stuff on there. I didn't have much luck on Google either. Thanks!

Try this as a start to your search:

With brief time I had I couldn't find a Japanese supplier. Shipping could be a problem since it is a highly flammable product.
Here's an artist who's running a workshop this weekend in the application of urushi -- http://www.shashahigby.com/shashasched.htm If you can't get there, she might be able to answer a few questions over the phone.
Jamie,
Thanks for your help. I am going to E-Mail her and see what she says. We also have some stores here in town that I am going to talk to about it. Thanks!
