I want to know how to make a fine crackle finish, kind of what you would find on
old china, the crackle finishes I have found are too course. Any help would be
appreciated. I am using this finish on a reproduction clock to age the clock dial.

You might consider coating the face with shellac. Mix some walnut crystals in warm water. Let it cool. Apply this mixture to the shellac coat. You will get some interesting crackle. You have to play around with the dilution of the crystals to see if it is what you want. Make samples, lots of them.
Another thought;
You may consider laying something coarse into a wet coat of shellac and lifting it out to produce some texture. You would need to glaze it afterwards for the reliefs to show up. Make samples. You might come up with a happy mistake.

Have you ever used behlen's crackle finish?McClosky also puts out a crackle finish.
Have you heard good or bad about these?
Are walnut crystals a type of shellac?
I've never used either one of the products you asked about.
Walnut crystals are not shellac. Basically, they are a water soluble dye.
