Hi All,
We have to put our furniture into storage in the western part of VA from now until April of next year. For some reason the nearest climate controlled storage facility is 125 miles away. We have a number of solid cherry handmade pieces and I don’t want them damaged. Since there will be humidity and cold issues can anyone tell me if I can safely use an unheated space or do I need to find climate controlled?
Thanks for your help.

NancyCT,
I stored my furniture up in MI for about 4 months....no problem with the antiques and their veneers in the cold or heat. However, some of the mahogany pieces (non-veneer) had access to the sun and that affected the finish on those pieces.
We stored in an unheated garage. The problem we encountered was humidity.
We made the mistake of covering the stuff with those woven blue tarps, and they trapped moisture. We wound up with mildew and veneer damage. Might have been alright if we hadn't done that.
Why find out?? Rent the truck and use the best storage you can afford. I live in coastal Texas, and between the humidity and the bugs, I could not consider non-climate controlled for the good stuff. Fortunately, I don't have much good stuff.
While in the service out of Ft.Bragg, NC, I was deployed away from the states for four years and left a garage full of stuff in a nearby storage place in hot-humid & cold in winter Fayetteville. I stored away a 100+ yr old cherry desk, a 60 yr old oak work bench and loads of other wood items & tools. No problem, just insured plenty of air circ w/space and "stickers", pallets help with getting it stacked up off of the concrete floor. I don't recall placing a sheet of cloth or cardboard over anything, just more wood stock on the bench and the bench was stacked to cover the desk. I oiled and wiped the tools down, and had little or no rust to deal with upon return. No trouble with bugs or wood borers either, some cedar here and there helped.
