Fine Woodworking Shellac Webinar….so disappointing.
At the computer, adult beverage in hand, 10 minutes before the noted start time to watch the shellac webinar this evening only to get the message the webinar is full. Would understand if I had crashed the party, but I had preregistered and received the Ben Strano email with my “special” link to attend. Seems if the attendee capacity were limited the registration process would have stopped taking signups once that limit was hit. You sure this is not a government run thing?

I was on and then booted. Very disappointed!
Agreed! I am in the same boat, changed plans to watch and then over capacity. Why take the registration if there are not enough spots? Hard to imagine FWW attendance is beyond the max attendance limits of Webex. But maybe more popular than I think!
Same thing happened to me. All of the other webinars I got into no problem. I'm not sure what happened to this one. I'm guessing one of the options wasn't selected properly. Can't wait to see it later. Of course, I was really looking forward to it and had planned my day around it. Oh well, I guess I will have to go woodwork in my shop.
Edit: I kept trying. I was able to get in after about an hour.
I was on for awhile. Didn't get much from the beginning and left. Couldn't get back to it. Will try to watch the recording in the next week.
Great session, learned alot.
Agree with others signed up on the first day logged in ten mins before the start and was not aloud to join.

I forgot I was on the internet for a second there. Thanks for the reminder. 🤪
I could not get in either. I emailed Ben as I suspected there were more like me. This is the first one I have had any issues with and I have caught most of the past ones and enjoyed them- although somehow I did miss the last one entirely. It looks like perhaps they switched technologies in December and obviously there is some kind of limitation. It's a bit of bummer, but good that they make the replay available.
Also got locked out of the webinar. Is it going to be available?
Tom and Ben did a good job, lots of good information.
The communication indicated that it would be available for viewing afterwards for those who could not attend LIVE. I registered for event, but could not join. Anyone know the steps required to view after the LIVE event has ended?
I'm working on getting the video up to the website right now. Apparently we hit a cap on attendees that I didn't know existed on Big Marker. For that, I apologize, but the only thing we can do is to make sure it doesn't happen again.
I need to get something off of my chest. I am shocked at the emails I got last night while I was trying to run the webinar. I understand that is was an inconvenience for many that the free webinar they signed up for didn't function how we all wanted it to. But there is certainly not cause for attacking and insulting the staff of FW over it. Does everything go off how we would like it to in this "live to internet world"? No, but all we can do is stack the deck in our favor as much as we can, and hope for the best went the clock strikes 7. To those who think that I do any less than give 100% stacking the deck, and 100% when we go live, you don't know me very well and I don't think it would matter to you if you did.
Joe is right. There was an unchecked box that I didn't know existed capping the audience. Some people were adult about it, thank you to those people. The video will be up as soon as I can get it done.
Ben – Apologies to you and the FW staff for any improper responses that may have come your way. One thing to realize is many folks, myself included, have come to look forward to Thursday evenings at 7:00PM CT for Shop Night Live with Tom and Kris (the camera lady). For many, this is a glimpse of normalcy in a year that has been anything but. I’m sure some vented a level of frustration due to the technical difficulties that threw another wrench in plans. I myself am an IT professional and on many occasions have heard “technology is great…..when it works”. Hopefully FW continues to partner with Tom and the SNL series to keep these events coming. Not sure if the plan is for FW to take them over or just jump in and provide some level of sponsorship, but as experienced last night, many look forward to these “get away from it all” sessions. The best to you and the FW team and many thanks for your efforts.
Thanks Ben for all you do. I have been a FWW subscriber for a few decades, over that time, there have been few hiccups.
I continue to look forward to the receipt of the mag and enjoy the additional content that is provided.
Thanks to you and your colleagues!
It's a bummer that it didn't work, and I'm certain that it was an unexpected accident (they happen!) that caused the problem. That being said, I would NEVER go on my employer's website and bemoan the fact that I took some heat for something promised that didn't deliver.
Oh my... a bit thin skinned. Webinar may have been free, but FWW is not. Additionally, even though it was free, the event represented FWW... your post (Ben’s) seems to indicate a need for customer service training.
Thanks to Tom for sharing his expertise ! He is a class act !
I can understand people being disappointed and irritated. But it doesn't excuse being abusive. It just didn't warrant that kind of response.
I don't think Ben is being thin-skinned. Folks who went over the top with personal attacks and insults were the ones being thin-skinned.
Society as a whole needs to back away from the ledge. There are situations that justify harsh reactions. Being unable to watch a webinar is not one of them.
What gives me or anyone else the right to "stomp" on someone. And when that someone offers an explanation and a request for civility, I accuse them of being "thin-skin".
That reply could NOT have been part of your training. And the passive aggressive "I'll get it up as soon as I can get it done" is immature at best. When in doubt.. "Sorry I messed up- I'll be better next time" works for most people
Thanks for the info Ben. It still feels like 2020 and everyone has a shorter fuze that normal. How will we learn how to see it on the FW website?
If Tom accomplished one thing . . . convincing us that shellac is a finish that we really should consider . . . MISSION ACCOMPLISHED !
Thank you Tom and Ben. Can't wait to see the re-broadcast.
The replay is available now: https://www.finewoodworking.com/2021/02/09/webinar-shellac-the-wonder-finish-with-tom-mclaughlin
Thank you, Ben!
Ben, I just want to say thank you for all you do at FWW. As a very long time subscriber I have seen many changes over the year. Your impact is clear and very welcome. Keep up the great work. I love the podcast and all the online content.
Ben,
Just wanted to add my appreciation for your work. As everyone knows sometimes s**t happens to all of us.
Thanks,
Matt
Thanks Ben for all you do. It was a great topic and so glad I can go watch the recorded version.
Ditto... interesting webinar.
Like many others I was unable to attend real-time, but watching the recorded version was plenty good.
Keep up the good work Ben!
keep up the good work Ben
I enjoyed, learned a lot. Thanks for providing to us all. Any problems, well in my mind their all just FWPs as my 32 yo daughter likes to tell me when I get close to that edge. A great learning experience, in my mind, is when I end up with questions at the end I didn’t know I had. Timely for me.
I am afraid that what we are witnessing with the derogatory comments is a society generally frustrated with the rather constant bombardment of lies. One only has to listen to verbal offerings from the news media, politicians, and people in power to both hear and see the "forked tongue".
What should we do about it? We should all strive to follow Ben Strano's example to openly acknowledge a problem, accept responsibility, and quickly work to correct problems. Thankfully, Mr. Stranos' initials do not represent the typical BS we have grown so weary of. All that most of us ask is that people simply tell the truth. Benjamin has done that and we thank him for his personal integrity.
