I just got a reliant Dovetail jig as a gift. I have a bosch router and purchased the guides for the router base. I have the standard 1/2 inch template. How do you get a bit to cut the exact width of the joint without cutting into the jig. Do I have to use a bit with bearing on it or can I just use the guide. Please help figure out what to do with this.

I guess to simplify my question about the Reliant Dovetail jig. Can you cut finger joints on these relativley simple jigs? I can't seem to cut the notches wide enough. This is primarily due to the fact that when you are using the bushings the bit must be the same size as the outside of the bushing. This prevents you from raising the bit up into the router. I am not positive but it seems that the only way that I am going to be able to cut a finger joint is to have a bearing on the topside of the router bit.
*There are easier ways to make finger joints.Do you have a table you can mount your router in? Using some key stock as a slide/guide, I've made very useful jigs to cut 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" finger (box) joints. It's almost as easy cutting them on the table saw with a dado blade set. You'll need a jig to attach to your miter guage, and a guide "pin" just as wide as the slot cut by the dado blade. You mount the pin in the miter extension, exactly as far away from the blade as the blade is wide. You make your first slot with your board slid against the pin. Then lift the slot OVER the pin to make the next perfectly aligned slot. Continue down the board end.If you're interested, I "might" be able to post a picture of the router jig. I'll have to take one though, and the jigs are currently at my school shop. Let me know.Dave
