Greetings,
I am really struggling to design the perfect classical finial. I would like to find a book on design that focuses on finials. Are there rules for creating finials? Does anyone have any suggestions?

LTANNEN ,
Rules ? We don't need no rules . Seriously the perfect classic finial may have already been designed . Will your finials be turned ? what type of project is it ? The best design may be determined by the nature of the project . You can look through bed and headboard catalogs as well as curtain and drapery rod finials , for some basic and common designs. Look in some architectural millwork design books and such for ideas .Tell us more about what you are up to .
good luck dusty
LTANNEN,
Look in vol III of Wallace Nutting's book, Furniture Treasury. Lots of examples there.

I am a turner, and have turned several finials before. I am finding though that they do not look right with the finished piece. I am looking for a classical design to match my classical looking turnings. Thanks for the heads info.
