Hi,
First post here but a long time FWW reader from way back in the B&W days and the big format.
Here where I live I’m in charge of a quick and easy (I Thought<G>) kitchen remodel. Actually it’s going well, all the panels and parts are milled and about ready to assemble but I have one quick question which was put forth in the subject line:
Oh yes let me first say that the wood is ash, 3/4″ ply for the one large main panel and edge with a 3/4″ x 7/8″ solid ash what has a slight dado to fit the edge of the ply wood, so it’s just proud of the panel. I did it this way to cover and tear out. So I’ll have just that one corner that might be hard to get an even finish by brushing.
We are finishing with some Minwax polyshades Honey Pine which is color and PU in one. 2 coats have served me well in the past.
But Now I’m considering putting one coat on ALL the sanded lumber, before assembled, gluing up and then going in with a lighter coat. I’m concerned about getting a sloppy inside corner. It’s about 65° in the shop and the Minwax is sorta thick to begin with.
Of course I’m also considering assembling and then finishing as otherwise there would be no debate<G>
But how will Titebond II work on finished wood? I’m using TBII as it matches the color better than TBIII which I actually like and prefer but it’s a bit dark for this very light wood.
I’m really just flipping coins on this one and figure either was would work fine.
What say you?
Thanks!
PAX,
Bro.Luke

Do not apply finish to any joint, and then glue it up. It will not hold. At all.
If you must prefinish, tape off all glue areas before finishing.
