As I was putting the final coats of finish on a batch (15) of maple drawers I’m making for a client, I was reflecting on the day spent sanding, routing edges, filling tiny voids in dovetails, and so on. As sometimes happens when performing repetitive work for long periods, a little motto began to develop in my mind:
“When finishing projects, take care to remove all non-decorative tooling marks, pencil lines and blood stains from the work.”
A kudo to Jeff at Homestead Finishing: I was having a problem with one of the finishes I bought from him for this project and he graciously replaced the defective product out of his inventory so I wouldn’t have to deal with the manufacturer. This made a very positive impression on me!

I think a blood stain or two adds character and allows the authorities to find the person responsible for the project.
