I'd finish it the ame way I do my rolling pins. Put it in the lathe and sand up to a 320-400 grit, then take sawdust in the plam of your hand and lightly press against the wood while it spins. Looks like a nice smooth varnish finish
isn't pine tar the traditional finish?... <G>
