I am building a small dinning set of quarter sawn oak and am wanting to reproduce the look of Craftsman style furniture. I wwould like to end up with a golden oak look. do I need to use a wood filler and any suggestions on stain vs dye stains. I like to use shellac as a topcoat.

I suggest you go to http://www.homesteadfinishing.com in the articles section and read the finishing schedule that Jeff Jewitt provides for craftsman finishes.
Thanks, that was my next stop I just havent made the time to do it. I have a couple of Jeff,s books and have reffered to it often, I think he's one of the best.
I've used a finish combination that is easy and looks good:
1) sand to 220
2) apply an oil finish (I used teak, but BLO is fine).
3) Lightly and quickly apply Minwax Jacobean stain -- wipe on, wipe off. It will darken the grain without affecting the rest too much.
4) I used a wax "top coat", but you could shellac topcoat it if you prefer.
Photos are available on my website (click on my name in the to/from area to get a link to it. See the photos for mission style end tables).
