Hi everyone,
I recently picked up some used wicker arm chairs with wooden legs at a garage sale. The furniture is modern and has some sort of thin clear finish on it. I want to use these chairs outdoors. I live on the west coast a few miles from the ocean and wooden and metal things may deteriorate fast. I’d like to put a protective coat on these chairs and I’m thinking of applying marine varnish on them. Do you know if there would be any problem doing this? Would it be OK to apply the varnish on these chairs without doing any prep work? (I will sand the legs lightly first though). Would the varnish bond to the current finish?
I really appreciate any advice you may have.
Thank you very much!

Honestly,if this is ordinary wicker furniture and you are going to use it outside with no protection, put what you want on it because it probably won't last long enough to matter. I take it that it is maybe tan or brownish in color? The most durable finish would probably be automotive paint. This is what the refinisher uses when my sister has hers redone. But her use is indoors.
Gretchen,
Thank you very much for the advice. I'm going to explore the automotive paint and the paint that VikingVood suggested before committing these wicker furniture for outdoor use. I looked online on outdoor wicker furniture for sale, it appears that these are made of resin, not ordinary wicker like the one I picked up.
Have a nice day!

That is correct. This furniture will not stand up to outdoor use--it is "wood" or willow, and will absorb water and rot, no matter what you put on it.Gretchen
Check out Dalys Ship & Shore http://www.dalyspaint.com/catalog_seafin.html I have
used it on my outdoor furniture with great success & I also live in the NW.
Dear VikingVood,
Thank you very much for suggesting this paint company. The products they offer look wonderful. I love the colors!!! They make me want to repaint the whole house! I will definitely use their spar paint on the outdoor wood furniture on my project list.
Have a nice day!
