Hello All,
I have a grandchild on the way and hoped to make her a box out of padauk for tyhe countless treasures she/he’ll be getting from Grandma and Grampa. Having already bought the wood, I learn that padauk darkens with exposure to light (or perhaps air). Do any of you know of a finish that will preserve the brilliant red of the original state?
Thanks,
Bizhiw

Biz,
Sorry, can't be done. You can only slow it down a bit-seal it with a shellac sealer, apply a finish such as a precatalysed lacquer, keep it out of the light and it will take longer to turn the inevitable dark colour.
Precautions to Finishing Padauk
Any precautions anyone can help me out with on finishing padauk? It's oily, so I am wondering if there are any no-nos when finishing the stuff. Thinking of going w/ a PreCat or a CV.
Thanks
Bonding can be a problem due to the oil. The generally recommended solution is to wipe down the surface with a fast drying solvent, such as lacquer thinner and then apply the finish as soon as the solvent evaporate. Don't give it time for oil to reemerge to the surface.
Padauk has some health issues associated with it. You might want to go here for some info:
