If left unfinished, it will weather to an almost silver color.
I've finished teak in marine environments with spar varnishes. They last for a number of years, but will still need refreshing every so often.
I've made a few small tools (marking gauges and the like) out of scraps and used BLO and Shellac. It is a beautiful finish, that works nicely and feels wonderful in the hand, but I doubt it would last outside for long.
Nothing lasts for long outside.
I have used just about every finish on outdoor teak over the past many years and I have settled on marine Cetol for durability. It will go for up to 8 years with annual maintenance, make sure you put no less than 4 coats to start with and plan to refresh once a year with one or two coats.
I've used Epifanes finish for outdoor projects and it has been amazing. It's a pain to put on as it dries slowly with 24 hours between six or seven coats but it lasts and lasts. I have a white oak table that has been left outside out for 3 midwest winters in a row. We get lots and lots of snow with temps down to almost -30 last year. It looks hardly worn. The magazine did a review of outdoor finishes in the May/June issue of 2009. Epifanes is the only one that did really well.
I also use Epiphanes on outdoor teak that does not see wear and it will last forever also. It is a much nicer finish and if you can spray it would make your job much easier. It is however less forgiving than Cetol .
