I’m hoping some of you have worked with Walnut and can offer some finishing advice before I screw up two otherwise nice bow-front end tables. I’ve experimented with honey maple amber analine dye / shellac / water-based poly and like the result, but I don’t absolutely “love it”. It’s just a bit too orange I guess. These end tables are going into the “informal” den, so I was not planning on using grain filler (something else I have to learn…). Has anyone used a combination they really like? I’m looking for something not too dark since dark seems more formal to me, and I don’t want to hide all of the grain, but don’t want to showcase the pores either.
Now – is anyone still with me or did my description scare you off?! Any photos / advice would be sincerely appreciated.

I use a stain made from dried walnut hulls, followed by either natural Watco or a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and turpentine (prefer the Watco) then either orange or garnet shellac. I think it gives the wood a rich look without being too dark.
