I’m thinking of building a secretary out of sapele, was wanting to know what would be a good finish. Does it finish the same as mahogany?
I was concerned about how it will look as it ages,Does sapele get darker?
Thanks

fpmill,
Sapele finishes and behaves much like mahogany does and is often used in it's place.
What type of finsh you should use is a loaded question. What is your experience level?
The very thin wipe on varnishes are extremely simple to use yet offer little overall durability.
A brushing varnish will be more work, but will yield a surface film that will will stand rubbing out if desired.
Shellac will give you a surface that is second to none. It doesn't brush out slowly like an oil product, so there is a learning curve although it is not that steep.
Then there is lacquer if you have the capability to spray a finish.
So back to my question, what is your experience level?
Peter
Thanks for your response,I would say I have some experiebce mostly with oil finishes such as tounge oil,I haven't used shellac before but would like to try,a finish such as that and that would fill the pores of the sapele.Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
