Hello All,
I am a novice at woodworking but have taken on a wainscoting project. I need advice on the type of finish nailer (air operated) and nails to use to attach 3/4 and 1-1/16 inch red oak to 1/2 inch oak plywood, and keep the red oak boards from splitting!
Thank You
Rick

Many of us like the 15 gauge angled finish nailers. They use a a solid nail and can get into places without having to turn the gun in strange positions like a straight magazine 16 ga. Nail placement will have a lot to do with splitting. Keeping back about an inch from ends and edges helps. I do quite a bit of oak trim and can't remember any splitting problems except very small pieces. Those are better to pre-drill and hand nail or glue. On door and window casings, I don't try to nail straight in, close to the edge. I keep back and carefully angle in to catch the jamb edge.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Is this trim work for a house? If so, you'll get more answers from the breaktime crew at that forum (up top in the center "breaktime"), they are all carpenters and general contractors. If the 15 gauge is spliting it, try a brad nailer and construction adhesive if its for trim work.
