Question:
At some point in the near future I’d like to refinish the wainscoat in my living room and dining room. It appears that the finish it has was not put on evenly or has simply worn away in some parts. The wood is some type of pine and is stained a dark brown w/ greenish effect that is visible in the wide grain. Should I just put a few coats of shellac over everything or should I remove the old shellac first (perhaps w/ alcohol)?
If I wipe the shellac off w/ alcohol do I risk ruining the stain?
If I apply shellac over everything w/o wiping off the existing finish–assuming it is shellac–will the shellac go on unevenly?
What to do?

Jose,
If it were me, I would first determine what the final finish is first. Click on this for more:

Ultimately, it is your call whether to strip or sand since we can't see your project. You'll have to determine in your own mind which will be the most efficient.
If you decide to strip, the type of stripper determines the effect on the base stain. In most cases it will have none.
