I have closet doors and window shutters that I want matched to my walls (both made of mdf).
They are painted in a water -based wall paint but I think they probably need a protective finish.
I don’t want the colour to change otherwsie they won’t match any more.
What is the best finish option, I wondered about a water-based varnish?

Yes you can protect your paint with any clear coating, waterbased top coat is kay. But you can also use other clear coating such as PU, or nc on your paint.
Thanks for the advice.
You can top coat with a clear acyrlic waterborne, but remember you will be likely to change the appearance, particularly with respect to the sheen, perhaps not so much as far as color.
Personally, I don't see the need for exact match of trim and walls. Traditionally a higher sheen enamel is chosen for the trim, providing greater durability than the matt surfaced wall paint. You could use a durable paint of the same color as the walls, without having to worry about changes caused by a top coating process.
Agree with Steve. Using an oil base paint of semi-gloss would be all the protection you need.
