The biggest problem I keep encountering in finishing my projects (mostly pine and oak), it how to finish over brads, small imperfections, etc. I’ve tried several diffent types of wood filler, but they never seem to stain like the wood. I’ve used fill sticks, both before the final finish, and after the final finish, and can’t say I’m real pleased with those results either.
Can anyone help me out on the most effective way to solve this dilemna? Thanks

use the soft painter's putty that comes in little jars, color it with some of the stain you used on your project, and fill nail holes after you stain your project but before you finish it. works like a dream.
*Next time try and use one of the oldest methods known. Make your filler using the fine dust from the peice you are making mixed with glue to form a natural putty. Since you are making this using the same wood it will take color and/or finish the same. GOOD LUCK!!!
*Thanks Bullet and Jim, I'm going to give it a try. One question though Jim, won't the glue in the putty mix cause it to take the stain differently?Ray
*drvnputt, When mixing this try to make a paste from your mixture using more dust than glue. Use a white glue if possible and test it on a peice of scrap whenever possible until you are comfortable with the mix. First rule of thumb is to experiment first until you acheive the desired effect.Have fun and proceed slowly...GOOD LUCK..
