Would tried and true oil varnish over black milk paint be a safe finish to use on my new Mantle. In other words will my house burn down?

Given the great heat and humidity changes the mantle will be exposed to, I'd go with spar varnish.
Jeff
Jeff,
I'm trying to get down a good wipe on technique. I read somewhere 1/3 terp, 1/3 poly, 1/3 spar. would that work here? appreciate it.
Wouldn't mix varnishes. Not that you can't, just be sure of compatibility. If you want to convert brushing to wiping, Jewitts solution was something like a 50/50 mix with naptha and Viva brand towels (untextured). You could probably find it in a back issue . . maybe about 2 years ago? Tried it. Works fine, real thin coats.
I just completed an Oak mantle, my first real woodworking project. I used a mixture of 1/3 each spar varnish, turpentine(gum spirits), and pure tung oil. I'm very happy with the results and will try to send in photos. I chose this mixture after gathering information here and other places. It's definately not something I would use on something that would see a lot of wear and tear, by this mantel won't. I obviously can't speak on how it will hold up over the long haul, but it looks great know. I'm debating waxing it or leaving as is so I can touch it up with tung oil over the years, any advice? I worried about the flamability issue as well, but I read a contribution in this forum that said once the finish cures it would be OK.
