Folks,
I have a rather large pencil post bed in my shop. I was going to finish it dissasembled. However, there are lots of faces on those posts and I think it may go faster to do it assembled. I was going to paint/pad on some shellac. Anyone out there done one of these before?

I have finished several pencil post beds and have done all of them disassembled. The top had a hole for a finial in it and I drilled another hole in the bottom for a dowel and the suported each post between a couple of sawhorses with a dowel pin in each end. Easy to rotate to get to each face and you can stand them up and lean them against a wall with the dowels still in place to dry. No finished surface will come in contact with the wall if you size the dowels properly. I used a sprayed laquer finish on most of mine, some got a wiping varnish and some got shellac and the laquer (both sprayed). System worked well each time. I find it much easier to control the finish application when working on a horizontal surface.
Tom,
That is an outstanding suggestion. Many thanks!
