I am about to start finishing a purpleheart workbench and I need some suggestions on finishes. The bench is a traditional design and I would like a finish that is consistent with its appearance and use. #66 Varathane oil and a wax topcoat has been suggested, any other recommendations?

Gosh, you made a toolbench out of purpleheart? What kind of work do you do on it? I think an oil is the right finish so you could touch it up every once in a while.
*In retrospect I should have used a different wood but I had selected it based on its numbers for strength, movement in service and, I must admit, color. I do mixed media sculpture and I am branching out into custom furniture. The bench is designed to serve as a central work area for these things and bookbinding and leatherworking as well. If I were to do it over again I would probably do it in ash just because purple heart is just so damn hard to work. The stuff eats tools, even carbide blunts noticibly after extended working.
