I just completed an aromatic cedar box for my wife for our first anniversary. I would like to preserve the purple hues but am aware of the fairly quick oxidizing that will occur with time. I would like to keep the inside unfinished for that wonderfful aroma. any suggestions for a finish for the exterior? thanks-Eric in L.A.

The beautiful aroma of aromatic cedar reportedly contains a chemical that is an active ingredient in some paint removers. As I recall what I have read in the past, the best bet is shellac.

I agree with Charlie, a blonde shellac will work best on the cedar because of the natural chemicals in the wood. The alcohol base will the finish penetrate into the wood. The blonde will allow the natuaral colors to come through without tinting them.
I'd use a 1# cut for the first coat or two and then switch to a 2# cut for the final coat or two, depending on how high of a gloss and fill you want. Sand lightly with 220 or 320 between coats.
Should come out looking great.
