Are any alkyd varnishes on the market in California? If not, I'll consult Rollie for a likely substitute.

As far as I know, all alkyd varnishes have been phased out in California.

I've asked Rollie if he can recommend a non-alkyd substitute. You might also try contacting one of the varnish manufacturers and asking for their recommendations.
When I hear from Rollie, I'll let you know.

Rollie doesn't know of a non-alkyd substitute. Your best bet would be to contact a varnish manufacturer for guidance. Sorry we couldn't help more.
