I’m making a bed with the slats in the head board and foot board out of bird’s-eye maple, I want the finish to leave the wood as natural or light in color as possible but at the same time bring out the bird’s-eye markings. Any recommendations?

* Pre-cat lacquer.
* Blonde shellac.
* Water based varnish.
Hard to say which I would choose, and it would depend on several factors, such as quality of construction, the client, ease of application, and price the customer is paying, non of which really seem to apply in this case, so it's really down to your personal preference, and availability of equipment. Sliante.
*I use a lot of Birdseye and have tried most finishes. Waterbase gives it a dead plastic washed out look. Lacquer is fine if you have spray equipment. In my opinion the best look is achieved by first applying several coats of watco natural oil finish and AFTER 4 days drying time useing a lacquer or conversion varnish top coat. It brings out the birdseye and the curl in the wood, looks like a million bucks.
