I am trying to obtain a deep rich cherry finish as shown in this months issue (No. 161) of Fine Woodworking. The item is a music stand shown on page 24.
The item I am finishing is made of cherry wood. I would greatly appreciate any help.

Champ - I use Cherry alot. If exposed to sunlight once finished, it will naturally over time develop a rich, dark color. I try never to stain cherry, as it detracts from the finished look - so if you have the patience, use a natural oil stain and let it develop over a few months. If you must stain, look back at FWW several issues back had a good article on staining cherry.

Start with a coat of gel varnish, then apply a coat of gel stain. 24 hours later, finish any way you like. For a really great finish, skip steps one and two.
