If you want to use an oil varnish, get one that drys fast. Wipe the surface liberally with lacquer thinner to get the oil off. The thing you're looking for is that the oil doesn't seep back faster than the finish dries. Lacquer is a better option. Vinyl sealers work better on oily woods (same cleaning process) under lacquer, and they dry very quickly. Any slow drying finish you use without cleaning and sealing will likely cause you grief. Good luck.
