Hi:
See last issue of Woodworking regarding cherry finishing.
I most recently used 2 coats of Tried and True Varnish Oil (use it exactly as the container suggests) followed by paste wax and rubbing out with 0000 steel wool.
This finish won't work for all applications I admit. However, this was great for my need and I am really pleased with the result.

Alpha you may want to check out my post labeled "Cherry Sideboard" in the gallery section. I finished this piece in December, and listed the basic steps I used to finish the piece. The only thing with the curly material is that you may not want to use a stain blocker, as it may subdue the curl from poping.
