I just built a small Shaker blanket chest for my mothers 70th birthday. The box and plinth are cherry and the molding above plinth and the top are curly maple. My question is what finish to use to show the curly maple figure but not change color, I want the maple to stay light.

Bob Van Dyke teaches a class at his school that makes a blanket chest like what you described.
They use a wipe on poly that he swears does not change the color of his maple for their projects.
Another way is to use a water based varnish or poly.
Contact Bob in Ask The Experts for more info from him.
