The finish you apply depends on what the project is and how it will be used. I'd probably select entirely different finishes for a picture frame and the handrail of a staircase because they will be subject to different uses; the selection of wood would be an important, though, secondary consideration.
Koa isn't different enough from other woods to warrant highly specialized finishing techniques - it's pretty, and pretty expensive, but in other regards, not unusual.
So what's the project you're interested in finishing?

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
Jazzdogg,
I was looking for a way to mount my Sirius Satelite radio in my car via the cigarette lighter. I wanted to use a nice looking wood (that I had in stock) and finish it nicely to complement the interior finish of my car, which is the Vavona wood in the VW Touareg (can be seen at http://www.vw.ca). So, I cut a piece roughly 1.5" wide by 1.5" thick by 5" long.
Using my drill press I drilled a 2" deep by 1" diameter hole lengthwise into the koa to insert the DC power adapter portion and a smaller hole out the side to run the power cable. Then I mounted the radio unit on to the koa and plugged it in.
I am very happy with the physical result i.e. supporting the radio in the car out of the way of controls and gear shifter but would like a nice finish so it blends in the car little while bring out the natural beauty of the wood.
After all that I would really appreciate any thoughts you might have on a finishing process.
Thanks
JGI
I just recently finished a box to put pet cremains in and I used a danish oil followed by a couple of sprayed coats of shellac and sprayed lacquer. I'll try to send a pic of the results
Hobbs,
Sorry to hear about your pet. A tough thing to go through. I would love to see the results.
Thanks,
JGI
