Hello everyone. Im at the end of finishing a very large entertainment center. The doors and drawers are solid mahogany. The doors have mahogany veners over 3/8 mdf. The finish I went with is I sealed with shellac and did several coats of satin polly. Now that im putting it together I noticed the doors don’t match the drawer fronts. I think I need to add some stain to the drawer fronts. My question is. Do I need to sand down to the wood on the drawers or can I mix some stain with the polly?… Thanks for any advise BOB

Mixing stain with poly isn't a good idea. It's very very hard to apply that without getting an uneven streaky finish. I'm assuming this is oil based varnish and that you are applying the finish by hand. With a sprayable finish you could adjust the color by using a toner.
You might want to refinish the drawers. But, you do NOT want to sand off the finish, you want to remove it with chemical stripper. Sanding doesn't leave the finish evenly open and stains aren't accepted evenly. So strip and be sure to thoroughly rinse the stripper residue. (Laquer thinner is a good medium for that.) Methylene Chloride is the most effective stripper, but make sure to have really ample ventilation. Then just sand lightly and refinish. A little dye to adjust the color on the doors might by your best option, but to do that you do need to work through the entire finishing schedule on scrap to see if you have gotten it right.
thank you
Thanks for the good info.....I never would have thought to use stripper.....
Drawer Fronts
If it was me and it was more then likely that I would be stripping the drawer fronts - there is not a lot wasted by trying to add some color before going with the paint remover. If the coloring doesn't work - you were going to strip the drawers anyway -
