I am fairly new to woodworking. Recently I completed a kitchen island made from maple. Looking back I wish I would have used cherry, as now I want to acheive that look. Does anyone have a sure fired method for a beginner to acheive the look of cherry wood finished in a tung or danish oil without giving the maple a pink hue? Thank you

I have finished maple to resemble cherry on occasion ( when maple was cheap). I used a cherry aniline dye for the base color, and followed this with a glaze to achieve the final color. One thing I did, and I found it helped a lot, was to use a size of diluted hide glue. This helped eliminate or at least limit the blotching associated with staining maple. Youll need to experiment on scrap, carrying the finishing process through to the final step, before deciding on the proper way to achieve the look you are after.
