I am an extreme novice. I just completed a very primitive desk( 2 file cabinets and a piece of MDF for the top). Ok down right college like but it was an L shape and considering my skill level I was very happy.
My question; I was going to paint it white but after I got it together I decided to, if possible, just seal it with a varnish,polyurethane. Can I just put that type of product on the MDF to seal and protect it without damage to the board?

I have seen mdf stained and dyed to give it a color other than the dreary color that it is. Just putting any finish on it will be fine. I usually prime and paint the stuff. The best to use in any product is a non-grain raising finish. This will keep the smooth finish that it is sanded to from the factory.

Here's one way to finish MDF: our coats of stain ("Cabernet" color from Varathane) and four coats of wipe-on polyurethane on MDF.
