i am building some utility cabinets out of 3/4 inch mdf connected with knockdown fasteners. does anyone have any experience finishing mdf to a durable surface? i was thinking de-waxed shellac to seal and three coats of varnish over top, but any other suggestions from those who have some experience finishing this material would be much appreciated. thanks.

I just finished an MDF table top for my router table and I used five coats of Polyureathane, its a smooth ahd durable finish. Might be an option.

EK,
Not sure what you mean by durable. For cabinets, nothing beats spray paint on MDF. It coats smoothly and several coats will yield a long-lasting finish if you aren't dragging wood across a router table. I use Krylon spray paint from the local Ace Hardware 'cause I don't have a compressor.
