Any suggestions as to the best approach to finish oak dentil crown molding?
I am re doing my living room and plan to install the molding [6″ PROFILE WITH DENTIL] after I finish it.
I’ve tried staining….. NIGHTMARE!!!! Getting between the dentils is near impossible!!!
Anyway, some friends of mine built their home about 10 years ago. They have oak millwork too! They said the guy that installed it installed the wood on the walls first, then finished it with a sprayed on finish called “tanned oak”. After he finished the wood, the painters came in, primed the walls where the overspray landed, painted and wallpapered.
They don’t remember the brand of the finish nor the guy’s name, so they are not much help….BUT BOY IS THEIR WOOD PRETTY!!! It’s a medium warm [“tan”] finish and I’d love to get my hands on the stuff they used.
Anyone have any clue what type/brand finish this might have been, or know of a similiar product on the market today? Any advise would really be appreciated!!!

John,
I've never heard of that product but you can probably get the same effect by either spraying the molding with an aniline dye (either water or alcohol based) and then spraying with a clear sealer. Or, if you have a spray gun, mix the dye with the sealer and spray the thing all in one step.
*I've never used a dye before...any suggestions as to brands or where to purchase? How do you mix the dye and sealer for the one-step application? Thanks.John
*Get it from Homestead Finishing (www.homesteadfinishing.com), Jeff Jewitt's operation. Jeff's got the alcohol based and water based dyes. You can ask to speak to Jeff and ask him what he recommends. He's a great guy and has a wealth of knowledge.Good luck,Nick
