I would like to produce a smooth, transparent, hard and durable finish to go over a two color crackle finish.
What finish works best, and have you got any good advice on its application…?
Thanks,
Matt Liver more (Southampton, Hampshire England)

Matt: I've used diluted oil base varnish and at other times used diluted shellac, using a brush in both instances. Looks good.
*Matt: By "smooth", how smooth do you want it? Like glass, or as some say, a piano finish? My top coat is not that smooth to the touch, but it looks smooth. If I wanted glass smooth, I'd put on several coats, sanding between each coat, which would gradually fill the crackle valleys.
*Matt, Shellac is not a very durable finish, and over time even "super blonde" will yellow a little. Oil base varnish is more durable than shellac, but you're weakening it by diluting it. It also will yellow over time. For a good, clear, durable finish use a brushable waterbase Poly.Good LuckBob
*first of all what did you use to create the crackle finish? if you used milk paint or glue and a water based paint do not use a water base top coat.yo must use an oil base finish over the initial.
