My brother is wanting to finish some interior pine doors. He is looking for a “chocolate” tone. Unfortunately, we do not have any spray equipment. Thniking of sealing the door with varnish and then toning it with a combination of Behlen’s Solar-Lux dyes.
Any advice on techniques or products? Also, I’m not sure what to use as a topcoat.
Thanks-

I just got done finishing pine doors and have done 3 pine projects as of late. I have had very good luck sealing with dewaxed shellac dilluted with 2 parts denatured alcohol to 1 part shellac. wipe a good coat on and if there is any end grain (ie. panels), try to sand to a higher grit and seal very well (unless you dont mind the end grain darker after staining. I personally leave it darker most of the time because my wife likes the antiqued look). There are usually instructions but I think they say to seal and let dry for 24 hours. I have noticed that if I sand and stain about 3 or so hours after I apply I get better results, but that is just my personal experience. After sealing and sanding, use a gel stain, let dry, and then varnish. If you go with a dark chocolate brown, you can use poly but thin with a 1 to 1 ration and wipe it on. 3-5 thin coats look fabulous.
Thats what I have had luck with, hope it helps.
