I am finishing my first project and decided to stain it. It is poplar (which I understand is better for painting) and I wanted to attempt to stain this piece.
The thing that I am running into is that when I apply the stain I can only do, at the most, 3 sides because I do not want the stain to stick to my staining table.
Is this normal or is it okay to stain all 4 sides and let one side be in contact with the table?
Thanks,
Dan

Hello Dan,
I think it is important for the drying process to have all stained faces be in contact with air, not another surface. What I do is either leave one face unstained and put that face on the table or lift my piece up on support pieces of wood that have been beveled so as to form a cathedral. This way only a tiny spot of the supports is in contact with the stained piece. Here's the idea: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=57821&cat=1,43456,43390

I use scrap 1/2 inch ply wood squares with a few brads sticking out. OK, so the brads will sometimes show a few marks but very easy to correct.
