I’ve read that in frame and panel construction you should finish the raised panels first before you assemble the frame, so that if the panel shrinks, it won’t expose unfinished material. I’ve done several projects this way, but I always end up having to mask off the panel each time, so that when I finish the frame, I don’t get sealer coat on top of the panel topcoat, etc. I usually use Waterlox or spray shellac. Do other people mask the panels as well, or is there a better way?

Spencer, I just stain the panel before assembling the frame, then I stain the frame and finish the entire door. Sometimes I only stain the shaped section of the panel and then finish the panel when I do the frame. Works for me.
Thanks!
