Hi folks,
This is my first woodworking project. I am just completing a child’s sled made of red oak for my granddaughter.
I would like to stain it and then apply a finish that will be durable as its use will be mainly in the snow and cold weather for part of the year. My granddaughter lives in the Chicago area.
I look forward to any and all suggestions.
Thannk you,

Don,
You might like the simplicity of Bartley's Gel Stains--much easier to use than other stains. I have used the Dark Mahogany on red oak--try two or three applications. (Follow the instructions on the can.)
Then use several coats of polyurethane for long-term durability.

Don,
Check out this web site for examples of Bartley's Gel Stains.

Notice the Dark Brown Mahogany on red oak.

Bert,
Thank you for the information regarding the finish on the sled project. It nice for us beginners to have this information available.

The stain is up to you, but the finish should be a Spar Varathene. I usually apply several coats (sanding with 320 grit between coats) on any piece that might contact moisture. You'll be happy with the results.
