I am planning on setting up an area apart from my shop where I can do my spray finishing. I have one small space (approximately 6 X 10 feet) located next to the furnace room where we have both a gas furnace and hot water heater. This space does have a window that could be used to vent directly outside. My thought was to use an explosion-proof fan. I want to be able to spray a variety of finishes and am concerned about creating a fire hazard if I use this space next to the furnace room as a spray booth. Any thoughts??? Sciman

I do not spray my finishes so I cannot speak to safety issues concerning them. I do know that lacquer is heavier than air and down low is where your pilot light is on a water heater. I wouldn't put a spray booth anywhere near an open flame source such as you're considering. But that's just me.
I would contact your fire marshal and gas company on safety precautions and regulations.
I do spray finishes and absolutely second what Gary said. Lacquer fumes are heavy and will travel to a source of ignition. In your case that ignition source is very close making the space you spoke of impractical and dangerous.
